5 Effective Home Remedies For Sleep Apnea Relief

Sleep apnea is a type of sleep disorder which is related to breathing problems while sleeping. The breathing of the person is interrupted and can cause severe health problem. This can happen several hundreds of times during the duration of sleep when the breathing keeps dropping every now and then. When breathing stops, the various parts of the body including the brain may not be able to receive sufficient amounts of oxygen.

Basically, there are two types of sleep apnea, Obstructive Sleep apnea (OSA) and Central Sleep apnea (CSA). Now, OSA is more common than CSA. It is associated with the blockage of the airway and is related to the collapse of the soft tissues behind the throat, during deep sleep. CSA is a condition where there is no blockage in the airway but there are various signaling issues from the muscles which are related to the unevenness of the control center for respiration.

Sleep apnea can occur to anyone of any age group. The risk of sleep apnea is higher if you are obese, over 40 years of age, you have large tongue or tonsils or if it runs in the family. Some other causes of sleep apnea are GERD, nasal obstruction or any allergy or intolerance. Sleep apnea can cause major health issues like depression, fluctuation in blood pressure levels, stroke or heart attacks, diabetes as well as mild to severe headache.

If you have sleep apnea, you should get proper treatment in time. While you should seek medical assistance, there are also some effective home remedies that can help in reducing the symptoms of sleep apnea.

1. Chamomile:

Chamomile is a very effective natural remedy for sleep apnea. It is sedative because it consists of chemical compounds that helps in relaxing the nerves and muscles and induces us to sleep, just like a sedative pill. Moreover, it has anti-inflammatory properties that help in removing all blockages from airways that are responsible for snoring.[1]

In order to prepare a chamomile tea, take one teaspoon of chamomile and mix it with a cup of hot water. Now, cover it and allow it to steep for 4 to 5 minutes. Your chamomile tea is ready. However, you can add a little honey or lemon juice or little cardamom powder for taste and fragrance.

2. Cardamoms:

Cardamom is effective in managing sleep apnea as well as other sleep disorders due to its decongestant and expectorant properties. It has been used since ages for its medicinal and therapeutic properties. It works by clearing up the clogged or blocked nasal paths and relaxes the muscles in the nose. Freeing the nasal paths or passages also means less snoring and uninterrupted sound sleep.[2]

3. Cinnamon:

Cinnamon is widely used in ayurveda for its various medicinal and therapeutic properties. It works like a sedative and promotes mental relaxation and removes the obstacles that come in the airway while sleeping. To prepare a cinnamon tea, take two teaspoons of ginger paste and two or three small cinnamon stick and add all these to a cup of boiling water. Boil it for some time and then stain it. You can also add some honey into it for sweetness.[3]

4. Lavender:

Lavender is an excellent herbal remedy for sleep apnea. It is full of anti-inflammatory, sedative, soothing as well as relaxing properties that help in relaxing the muscles in the throat that causes obstruction so that you can have an uninterrupted sleep.

Add some lavender oil in a pitcher filled with hot water and inhale its steam. It relaxes your body and mind and induces you to sleep. Alternatively, you can spray or sprinkle a few drops of lavender oil into a piece of cloth and put it somewhere close to your nose, while going to bed. You can also drink lavender buds infused tea, twice or thrice a day for a good night’s sleep.[4]

5. Peppermint:

Peppermint helps in removing the obstacles that comes in the airways. Due to its anti- Inflammatory nature, it helps in easing the breathing process and eases any discomfort in breathing. It also helps in avoiding snoring. Add some peppermint oil in a glass of water and use this mixture to gurgle. Regular gargling with peppermint oil helps in reducing the symptoms of sleep apnea over time. Another way is to drink peppermint tea regularly.

For preparing peppermint tea, take a cup of hot water and add some peppermint leaves into it. Now, cover the water and allow it to steep for about 4-5 minutes. Stain the peppermint leaves infused water and it is now ready for ingestion. You can also add some honey into it.[5]
