Home Remedies For Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids or piles refers to inflamed and painful swelling of veins in and around the anus and lower rectal area. They can be either internal (inside the anus) or external (internal swelling that extends outside the rectum). Women can develop hemorrhoids during pregnancy due to extra pressure against the veins of the developing baby. Hemorrhoids can also occur when veins around the anus gets swollen due strain of lifting heavy load, obesity, forceful bowel movement (constipation) or due to long hours of sitting.

Whatever be the reason, hemorrhoids can be very uncomfortable and painful. For extreme cases, surgery is recommended. Most of the variety of creams and ointments used in traditional treatment usually have side effect like itching and dryness of the skin. Home remedies have longer lasting effect and fewer side effects compared to traditional treatment.

Remedies For Hemorrhoids

1. Turmeric

Turmeric having anti-inflammatory properties can be an effective treatment for hemorrhoids and have been used for centuries to treat the inflamed veins that cause painful bowel movement. It can be used in combination with petroleum jelly, clarified butter or Aloe Vera gel.

Things You Will Need

1 teaspoon turmeric
Petroleum jelly, or
Aloe Vera gel, or
Clarified butter

How To Use

Prepare an ointment by mixing 1 tsp of turmeric and 1 tablespoon of petroleum jelly. Apply this ointment to the hemorrhoids before a bowel movement. Turmeric will help to heal hemorrhoids and petroleum jelly will help to get rid of painful bowel movement by lubricating the rectum and anus.

Another healing ointment can be prepared using turmeric powder and Aloe Vera gel. Take 1 tsp of turmeric powder and 1 tbsp of Aloe Vera gel, mix them together and apply the ointment in and around the anus before you go to bed. This ointment will heal the fissures and bring relief from pain and inflammation. If aloe Vera gel is not available, you can use clarified butter instead.


2. Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is a tannin-rich herb and a soothing astringent which can sooth hemorrhoids and shrink the inflamed veins. If bleeding is involved, it is the best home remedy for hemorrhoids. Using witch hazel will reduce swelling and pain.

Things You Will Need

Undiluted witch hazel
Clean cotton ball, or
Medical wiping pad containing witch hazel

How To Use

Keep the bottle of witch hazel in the freezer for some time. The colder the witch hazel, better will be the effect. Put some undiluted which hazel on a cotton ball and apply on the hemorrhoids. Medicated wiping pads containing witch hazel are also available at drug store. Apply three or four times a day to find fast relief.

3. Sitz Bath

Taking sitz bath can help sooth hemorrhoids by shrinking the veins.

Bath tub
Warm water

How To Use

Fill your bathtub with warm water. Sit in the water for 15-20minutes. Sitz bath will reduce pain by increasing the blood flow to the hemorrhoids. This will, in turn, shrink the veins. Adding a handful of Epsom salt to the warm water will be more beneficial as Epsom salts can aid in soothing and shrinking the hemorrhoids.

If your job demands a lot of sitting, using a donut cushion will provide a lot of relief. Sitting in a regular chair for a long period can add pressure to your anal area and aggravate pain and inflammation.

Purchase a donut cushion from a medical store. This looks like an inner tube, which has no middle. This will help put pressure off the hemorrhoids and provide temporary relief.

5. Avoid Constipation

One of the most common causes of hemorrhoids is constipation. Straining during bowel movement aggravates hemorrhoids. Keeping bowel loose is necessary to prevent this condition. Along with drinking plenty of water and fluids, there are a number of natural ways through which you can stay regular.

Fiber rich fruits, vegetables and whole grains
Phylum seeds
Vegetable juice

How To Use

To cure chronic constipation, eat a diet high in fiber like fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Prunes or prune juice is very effective in keeping the bowel loose. Besides this, drinking mix juice of carrot, spinach, watercress and turnip leaves helps to get rid of constipation and eliminates pressure on the rectum.

If still you suffer from constipation, mix 2 tbsp of phylum seed in a glass of water and drink in the morning. Keep on drinking adequate water throughout the day to facilitate soft stool.


6. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is very effective for reducing swelling, pain and irritation. It can treat hemorrhoid both internally and externally. Purchase unpasteurized and unfiltered vinegar for strong effect.

How To Use

After cleaning the inflamed area gently, dab small amount of vinegar on a cotton ball and apply gently by pressing the cotton ball against the inflamed area to find relief from irritation and itching.

For treating internal hemorrhoids, drink 1 tsp vinegar mixed in a glass of water twice a day. You can add honey to enhance the taste.
