Diarrhea refers to a condition characterized by unpleasant and uncomfortable frequent watery or loose bowel movements often accompanied by stomach cramps, mild fever, pus or mucus in stool, nausea and vomiting. Diarrhea can be acute, mild or chronic. It is primarily caused due to viral or bacterial infection, particularly due to eating or drinking contaminated foods.

Other causes of diarrhea can be lactose intolerance, over-the counter antacids containing magnesium, antibiotics or too much consumption of vitamin C. Most cases of diarrhea are acute and can be treated with simple home remedies successfully. Depending on the intensity of diarrhea, home treatment can bring relief within 2 to 4 days. If no improvement is seen within a week, you must seek medical help.

Electrolytes

When you are suffering from diarrhea, there are two things that you must consider; stay hydrated to avoid dehydration and do not eat anything that can make it worse. To maintain body’s supply of water, drink electrolytes which will provide your body potassium, sodium and chloride.

Purified water
Lemon juice or Orange juice (not compulsory)

How to use

For making the perfect electrolyte drink, mix 1 tsp of salt and four tsp of sugar in one liter of water. You can add a little bit of lemon juice or orange juice to enrich it with potassium; but don’t drink large amounts of fruit juices, particularly apple juice as the fructose contained in it will be hard to digest. Keep on drinking this liquid the whole day.

When you suffer from diarrhea, your body can get dehydrated. Drinking water and other clear fluids in adequate quantities is necessary. It will help to replace the vitamins and minerals that you have lost.

Drink any of these fluids several times in a day. Avoid non-clear drinks and caffeinated beverages. Also avoid citrus juices.
